Stockport Photographer

It was amazing to be commissioned as a Stockport photographer by MSV housing. I was asked to head into Stockport town centre creating unique images for their annual report alongside some other towns in the North West.

Using my experience as a street photographer, I spent an afternoon walking around the market and new Redrock area of the town. I was looking for moments and compositions that characterise this old market town, recently rejuvenated and described as “the new Berlin”.

When someone thinks about photography, they may think about fancy studios or beautiful nature shots. But there’s something really special about street photography. It’s a type of photography that captures everyday life and the people who live it. And there’s no better place to capture this than in Stockport, the small town I grew up in.

One of the things that struck me the most was the diversity of the people. Stockport is a melting pot of cultures, and this is reflected in the faces you see on the streets. From young kids playing football to elderly couples holding hands, there’s a sense of community that’s palpable.

I also noticed the architecture. Old buildings and storefronts are contrasted with newer, more modern additions. It’s almost as if the town’s history is written on its walls. And this is something that’s unique to Stockport.

Finally, there’s a sense of resilience that Stockport exudes. It’s a town that’s been hit hard by the recession and other economic factors, but the people there continue to persevere. This is something that’s reflected in the street scenes I captured.
