English Heritage – Shout out Loud

They are fabulous! You really captured the atmosphere of the day beautifully….The whole team really appreciated your approach on Saturday – I think all the young persons hugely benefitted from your sensitive & unobtrusive style

Back in September last year I was contacted by Kirsty at English Heritage to document a fun day in Derbyshire. Kirsty is part of a team that supports young adults via English Heritage’s Shout Out Loud national youth engagement programme.

The group had an amazing weekend planned, and I was tasked with documenting their busy Saturday schedule without interfering or directing any events. It was exactly the type of brief I love to shoot.

The group of young adults and volunteers started with a tour of Bolsover Castle, which was looking truly stunning in the late summer sunshine. The guide, Nerys was an outstanding never-ending fountain of knowledge, and really brought the castle to life.

A journey by coach took us to the much cooler (and deeper) Creswell Crags. I never knew this place existed, but will be back with my kids for sure! A prehistoric site, you can walk in the footsteps of woolly mammoths through their impressive gorge. Hard hats and head torches at the ready, we entered the caves and discussed the stone-age tools discovered there.

The final stop was the Peak District village of Eyam, specifically the local museum. A historic village, infamous for its time during the Plague. The village sealed itself off from the world in an attempt to stop the spread of the disease, with most of the villages perishing.

A few of my favourite images from the day are below. What a wonderful event to photograph!
